Molainiai filtration park

Panevėžys, Lithuania

competition (1st prize)

This project reimagines a 13.5-hectare abandoned industrial site on the outskirts of Panevėžys, formerly used as wastewater filtration fields until 1979 and left with significant heavy metal contamination. The vision transforms this neglected brownfield into a unique educational and recreational landscape named Filtration Park.

The park's core concept is a thematic path that guides visitors through the area's ecological transformation narrative in four distinct stages: "Prehistory" (the era of pollution, represented by industrial art objects), "Present" (showcasing soil remediation with plants like black alders), "Hope" (demonstrating natural water filtration principles), and "Future" (a culminating Healing Garden with a clean water basin and amphitheater).

The design creates five different biospheres—including a wild forest, aquatic habitats, and sunflower meadows—to enhance biodiversity and showcase ecological recovery. Art installations made from recycled materials are integrated throughout the park, reflecting the site’s industrial past and its metamorphosis into a vibrant green space. The project serves as a living example of ecological restoration, merging nature, industrial heritage, and art into an immersive public amenity.

Park of the Mammoth

Vilnius, Lithuania

"Bauland together with a strong team of multidisciplinary experts has won the architectural-urban competition to revive a unique geomorphological reserve in the center of Vilnius.

Our vision for Mammoth Park is to introduce the history of the particular formation of Vilnius landscape to the visitors. From here one can overlook Vilnius central area and get to know how much of an impact the landscape had in the process of its development. Vilnius is the only European capital that is located at the edge of the last glacial period. It is for these reason the Mammoth park is planned to be a great source of information about the discoveries of mammoths in Vilnius, the spread of glacie, expressive terrain and specific vegetation."

Jozef Strumillo garden

Vilnius, Lithuania

This project transforms a neglected, inaccessible plot within the historic Vilnius Old Town into a vibrant public park. [cite_start]The site is the former location of a significant 19th-century botanical garden founded by Juozapas Strumila, a pioneer of scientific horticulture in Lithuania.

The design honors this unique heritage by creating a contemporary park that is both functional and commemorative. [cite_start]An organic network of paths connects three main zones: a central multifunctional lawn for community gatherings, an educational play and recreation area, and a botanical fruit-tree garden dedicated to Strumila's memory. [cite_start]This commemorative garden features plant species he once cultivated and a modern steel canopy for training trees, inspired directly by Strumila's own historical sketches.

A key architectural intervention is the creation of a new representative entrance with stairs from V. Šopeno street, navigating a 6.5-meter height difference to seamlessly connect the previously hidden garden to the city. [cite_start]The design thoughtfully preserves existing mature trees and frames views of historic ruins on-site, weaving the area's rich past into a dynamic public space for the future.

Trakai city garden

Trakai, Lithuania

"Trakai city garden vision is to preserve, restore and display historically formed natural qualities of the area. The territory in XVIth ct. was still part of a lake, which later became a swamp and now is ready to transform into an inclusive public space with gardens, sports area, recreational paths interactive zones for the community, children and elderly.

The concept consists of a layer of natural environment characterized by its biodiversity, it intertwines with spaces of social engagement combined with its recreational function. During the process of the design we organised workshops and a presentation for local communities where they could be involved in the decision-making about activities in the park. Thus park area is divided into three functional zones according to their nature: active leisure zone, calm recreational zone and community zone."

Gardeners’ village in Launagiai district

Vilnius, Lithuania

competition entry

"The key principle of the urban-architectural idea is to create a unique and different urban structure of the Gardeners’ village, which allows natural nature to blend into the environment.

The concept of a gardener's village is evident in both the architectural design and the multifunctional community spaces. New public and shared areas are being developed for the entire community, as well as for visitors from the surrounding districts. Plans include the creation of a Family Park, a green pedestrian alley, and several public squares. The private inner courtyards of the residential areas are separated by greenery, fostering a more intimate atmosphere with children's playgrounds, gardening areas, and places for leisure. To enrich life in the new town, a hierarchy of public spaces and direct visual connections between them have been proposed."
